The Bay is an excerpt from Chicago Fringe Opera’s Corsair submitted for the Decameron Opera Coalition’s Tales From A Safe Distance. Corsair was voted best new local Opera Production of 2020 by the Chicago Reader, and is based on a 14th century story by Giovanni Boccaccio, chronicling the serendipitous journey of a merchant sailor in search of material wealth. The Bay illustrates a moment where he is cornered by pirates and his vessel is under siege. Composer/librettist K. F. Jacques combines hip hop and operatic vocals over a bed of percussive orchestration to highlight the desperation of the moment, which concludes with our protagonist vowing to never surrender! Hyde Park was chosen because it’s the birthplace of K. F. Jacques; and The Silver Room represents the treasure that the Corsair covets throughout the story.
