Fizz & Ginger is streaming through June 22nd, donate to our campaign for a streaming link!

Fizz & Ginger traces the steps of the 1920s New Yorker nightlife reviewer, Lipstick, as she enters a party in pursuit of a story. Hot on the heels of her rum-running boyfriend Benny, she finds him at The Crossroads, mixed with company she’s never seen before. Old Tom Bullock is in town slinging drinks fresh out of his cocktail book while Marjorie croons the tunes of a lover lost to the Great War. Nellie, a writer for Harlem’s ‘The Messenger’ magazine, is there to support her bohemian best friend Bruce who is necking with a man he shouldn’t be necking with. With a jazz combo, this Chicago premiere pays homage to Lipstick’s reviews from the ‘New Yorker’ archives.

FIZZ & GINGER contains themes of racism, alcoholism, and police brutality, as well as profanity and simulated drug use.  Theatrical haze is used in this production.

Tenor Charles M. Anderson has sung a variety of roles in opera, most notably Rodolfo in La Bohème, Romeo in Romeo & Juliet, and The Witch in Hansel & Gretel. He has also appeared in several musical theater roles. Highlights include Jinx in Forever Plaid and Booker T. Washington in Ragtime. In concert, he has been featured as the tenor soloist for the Shoals Symphony Orchestra’s performances of Bach’s Magnificat and Saint-Saëns’ Christmas Oratorio.

Charles made his semi-professional debut with Mobile Opera chorus in the production of Verdi’s Il Trovatore. This was followed by a second appearance in their production of Giordano’s Andrea Chénier. In 2010, he was part of the inaugural Young Artists with The Druid City Opera Workshop at The University of Alabama. In 2013, he spent the summer in Michigan at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp where he performed Haydn’s Die Shöpfung.

The 2017-2018 season was quite exciting. Mr. Anderson spent the summer working with Des Moines Metro Opera Company during its 45th Anniversary season. There, he performed in Turandot and Billy Budd.

In the spring of 2021, Charles spent the summer singing the role of Aufidio in Mozart’s Lucio Silla with Chicago Summer Opera. In December, he appeared as King Kaspar in Music On Site’s traveling production of Amahl and the Night Visitors. In 2022, Charles made his debut with the Nashville Opera chorus in their production of Verdi’s Rigoletto, sang the role of Donald in Moore’s Gallantry, and returned to Chicago Summer Opera to perform the role of Monostatos. 

Since moving to Chicago, Charles has maintained an active schedule. In concert, he lent his voice in ensembles for both Rossini’s Stabat Mater and Mozart’s Requiem. He worked as a guest artist at North Park University performing the role of The Priest in Myers’ Buried Alive. Charles appeared in The Lyric Opera of Chicago’s production of The Factotum and Der fliegende Holländer. For the past seven months, Mr. Anderson has been in Germany singing at The Hessisches Staatstheater-Wiesbaden.

Earning critical acclaim for her “rich, clear voice” that is “geared towards storytelling” (Chicagoland Musical Theatre), Angela Born is a fach-defying opera theatre artist and she is thrilled to join Chicago Fringe Opera for their production of Fizz and Ginger. 

Particularly prolific in the realm of new music, Angela is a desired interpreter of new opera. Favorite roles include Lucinda in Dark Sisters (Nico Muhly), Patience in Patience and Sarah (Paula Kimper) and Harriet in The Infinite Energy of Ada Lovelace (Kamala Sankaram).(Honorable mention goes to the role of Whiskers in Robin Haigh’s zany The Man Who Woke Up. Can you call yourself a professional artist if you haven’t meowed your way through an opera?)  She is also the recipient of multiple Chicago DCASE grants and is the 2023 songSLAM winner for her premiere performance of Michelle Isaac’s “What Every Woman Must Not Say.” Favorite traditional operatic roles include Judith in Bluebeard’s Castle, Mimì in La Femme Bohème (a queer spin on the traditional opera), the titular role in Princess Ida, and Despina in Così fan tutte. Her most recent work includes the Witch in a touring children’s production of Hansel and Gretel (Humperdinck) with the Lyric Opera of the North and the Alto soloist in Handel’s Messiah with Wheaton College as part of their guest artist series. 

Angela was a company member with Third Eye Theatre Ensemble for a decade, and has performed with the Lyric Opera of the North, Loveland Opera Theatre, Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company, Ouroboros Opera, Opera West, Valkyrie Ensemble, Thompson Street Opera Company, and Transgressive Theatre-Opera. As a concert soloist, she has worked with Wheaton College, Morton Community Orchestra, the Peoria Area Civic Chorale, and Artemis Chamber Orchestra.

Soprano Dana Campbell made her professional debut with the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony Orchestra and has since been a guest artist with Virtuosi di Toronto, Toronto Classical Singers and Talisker Players, and a featured artist with the West Suburban Symphony, Southwest Symphony Orchestra, and Kenosha Symphony Orchestra.

With Toronto Operetta Theatre, she sang the title role in the Canadian première of Gonzalo Roig’s zarzuela Cecilia Valdes. For the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Ms. Campbell appeared in their revered productions of Porgy and Bess, and understudied the role of Addie Parker in their production of Charlie Parker’s Yardbird. With Maestro Robert Treviño and his Millennium Chamber Players, she undertook, among others, the roles of Female Chorus in The Rape of Lucretia, and Mimì in La Bohème. Ms. Campbell appeared in concert in Austria, under the baton of Edoardo Müller, and reprised Mimì in Italy for Maestro Joseph Rescigno. Ms. Campbell is a member of the celebrated Adrian Dunn Singers, and performs frequently with the South Shore Opera Company of Chicago, including turns in two of that company’s acclaimed productions: as Rachel Ross in Harriet Tubman: When I Crossed That Line to Freedom, and as Claire in Troubled Island. Other operatic favourites include Donna Elvira and Countess Almaviva, both for Summer Opera Lyric Theatre, Micaëla for American Chamber Opera, and Violetta for South Shore. Ms. Campbell is thrilled and honoured to have worked with her friend and colleague Khary “K. F. Jacques” Laurent, singing the role of Maddalena on his exciting OperaTronic project: L’Assassino, for Resonance Works Pittsburgh.

Fizz & Ginger marks Ms. Campbell’s third engagement with Chicago Fringe Opera, previously appearing on the company’s staged recital program Chicago Currents, and as understudy in Jake Heggie’s Two Remain: Out of Darkness, taking the stage on opening night as Krystyna Zywulska.

Emily Cox is a dynamic singer who has performed internationally in opera, orchestral works, cabaret and musical theater. Described as a ‘gifted singer with an endearing voice and deep connections with audiences’, her numerous roles include Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni, the Beggar Woman in Sweeney Todd, and Cinderella in Into the Woods. Other credits include Third Eye Ensemble, Chicago Summer Opera, the “”D:Activate”” concert series with DCASE, Chicago Folks Operetta, and Classical Revolution. This past February, Emily made her international soloist debut with Fourth Presbyterian’s Touring Choir, enchanting audiences across seven cities in India.  

An advocate for new music, Emily has been instrumental in premiering groundbreaking works nationwide. In 2019, Emily performed two roles in the world-premiere of Imogen, a new nonbinary opera by Elizabeth Rudolph. She then helped develop Curious Theatre Branch’s electronic opera, Open Wide, presented by DCASE and the Electro-Acoustic Theatre Symposium Festival. Since 2020, Emily has created six full-length albums of contemporary compositions under her production company, Cox Productions. Their newest album features the compositions of seven Midwestern composers and is slated for release this Spring 2024. Her next project, Written On the Table Where You Starved Me, received a 2023 Creators Grant from the Musicians Club of Women and will premiere this April with New Music Chicago.  

Known for her ‘not-to-be-missed comedic timing’, Emily’s cabaret, ‘Swipe Left’, was a part of the 2020 Chicago Cabaret Festival. Her newest show, “I Do, I Did, I’m DONE!’, was a Featured Performance of the 2023 Chicago Cabaret Week, hosted by DCASE, the Illinois Arts Council, and the Chicago Cabaret Professionals. This past November, Emily delighted audiences in New York City with a co-production of her work with Frigid Theatre and Theatre Workshop of New York. She closed a double-bill co-production of her works last month with Petite Productions.

Emily currently writes, performs and produces new works with her company, Cox Productions. She has served as Managing Director to /kor/ productions in Chicago since 2020, and looks forward to helping breathe life into new works for years to come.

Shortly after completing his Masters in opera performance, bass-baritone Khary Laurent took to producing his own material and creating a brand-new genre on the forefront of hip-hop and opera music under the pseudonym K. F. Jacques. From tours in exotic destinations around the world to The Rosie O’Donnel Show (Oprah Winfrey Network), Mr. Laurent has advanced from a chauffeur day job to captivating audiences worldwide with his exceptional fusion of rap, opera, and pop; dubbed OperaTronic. He’s performed multiple times as a headliner at House of Blues Chicago, and has performed his classic solo rendition of the national anthem at United Center, U. S. Cellular Field, and Soldier Field. Born and raised in Chicago, this new creative expression has clearly developed a following and paved his way to legendary status!

Ryan is a multidisciplinary artist with a focus on choreography and found movement vocabulary that is accessible to artists of all experience levels. Having most recently provided some movement/dance for The Consul with Third Eye Theatre, he is now firmly hooked on Opera. With a passion for new works and development, Ryan’s past work has included The Almost Emperor of the Unofficial Deestrick of Lake Michigan (Cats Cradle Theatre), Millennial Church (Bramble Theatre Co)  Baked! The Musical (CMTF), Queer Eye, A Musical Parody (Second City), Billy Elliot (MTW), Down the Moonlit Path (NWaC), THAW, and The Fly Honey Show (Company and Associate Choreographer).  Ryan is currently featured as Apollo in the new podcast series PSYCHOPOMPOS, a new imagining of Greek mythology (www.psychopomp-cast.com).

Lauded for his versatility as a performer, critically acclaimed tenor, Jonathan Zeng, has performed as a soloist with opera companies, theaters, and symphony orchestras throughout the United States. With a voice described by Chicago publications as “valiant”, “stunning”, “vibrant”, and “rich”, Jonathan is based in Chicago and has soloed with choral ensembles The William Ferris Chorale and Vox Venti. You may also have seen him serving as cantor at the historic St. Michael Church in Old Town, singing with the Grant Park Symphony Chorus, as Richard Dauntless in Ruddigore with The Gilbert  & Sullivan Opera Company or in multiple productions with Chicago Folks Operetta & Chicago Fringe Opera. Roles elsewhere range from Goro in Madama Butterfly & Beppe in I Pagliacci to Prince Charming in Cinderella, Chip Tolentino in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, and Frederic in Pirates of Penzance.

Jonathan’s cabaret, SONGS THAT SPEAK!, has had success throughout the Midwest. Its next iteration will be on Saturday, Aug 8, 2024 at the Venus Cabaret Theater in Chicago.

An avid proponent for arts education and vocal instruction, Jonathan has served as an adjunct faculty member in the Preparatory Department at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and has maintained a private voice studio for more than a decade. He teaches voice at Loyola Academy on the north side of Chicago. Jonathan received a BA in Music Education from the School of Music at Western IL University and an MM in vocal performance from the Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music (CCM). This year, soprano Jade Dashá has been seen in production with Thompson Street Opera (Pemphredo: We’ve Got Our Eye On You-Okoye) and Wilmington Concert Opera (Sounds Like Pearls– virtual recital). In 2023, Jade was a Smith Young Artist with Cedar Rapids Opera singing Miss Jones in the world-premier of Charlie and the Wolf, which toured local schools. She has also had the pleasure of working with Opera Steamboat and Chicago Fringe Opera, and was a 2023 Studio Artist with Central City Opera. In Summer 2022, Jade was a studio artist with Opera Neo covering Arminda in Mozart’s La Finta Giardiniera and Dalinda in Handel’s Ariodante.  Previously, Jade covered Grace Alumond in Chicago Opera Theater’s world-premier production of Quamino’s Map, and sang Dew Fairy in Evanston Chamber Opera’s production of Hansel and Gretel.

Jade has been recognized with several awards, including being named an Encouragement Winner at the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions Illinois District in 2020. She additionally received the Casa Italia Josephine L. LiPuma Vocal Scholarship and the Musicians Club of Women Farwell Trust Award in the same year. During her undergraduate years, Jade was selected as the 2018-2019 Mason Young Artist with the Imperial Symphony Orchestra.

When Jade is not singing she might be; researching various esoteric topics, looking at pictures of cats, doing yoga, thrifting, cooking, barista-ing or chatting with her loved ones.

Austin is a multi-talented individual with experience in various music genres such as classical, musical theatre, gospel, and more. Austin is from Warner Robins, Georgia where his grandmother taught him how to sing and play the piano, which ignited his love for music at an early age. He further expanded his musical knowledge by learning to play the violin, upright bass, clarinet, and other instruments. Austin studied Music Education at Belmont University in Nashville, TN, and later relocated to Chicago, IL. Some of his notable roles include Dr. Madden and Dr. Fine in Next to Normal, John Patton Jr. and more. In his free time, Austin enjoys cooking, crafting, and helping others. His favorite life advice is to “Be yourself because everyone else is taken.” Austin is thrilled to perform with the Chicago Fringe Opera.

Catherine O’Shaughnessy is a rising orchestral and opera conductor in the United States and abroad. Her performances have earned rave reviews from the Chicago Tribune, the Chicago Classical Review (“great skill, alertness and sensitivity”), and Vocal Arts Chicago (“resourcefulness…scrappiness and…fierce concentration”). Avidly committed to Chicago’s dynamic musical scene, she is currently the music director of Chicago Fringe Opera, and Principal Conductor of the 5th Wave Collective. In 2020, she proudly helped produce Fringe’s contribution to the Decameron Opera Coalition’s Tales From a Safe Distance—winner of the “Best Collaboration” award from 360° of Opera—which makes innovative use of technology to reimagine this art for challenging new circumstances.

A semi-finalist in the 2016 Spazio Musica International Conducting Competition, Catherine made her New York debut conducting Antonio Salieri’s La Cifra with the dell’Arte Opera Ensemble. She has also music directed Pyramus and Thisbe in Freiberg (Mittelsächsisches Theater) and conducted Don Giovanni and La Traviata in Orvieto (Teatro Mancinelli). In 2013 she conducted the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra at a sold-out performance in Tchaikovsky Hall, and in 2017 she guest-conducted the Piccadilly Symphony Orchestra (Manchester, UK). Catherine holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in orchestral and opera conducting from Arizona State University, where she was a student of William Reber and Timothy Russell.

Rose Freeman (zie/zir) is an award winning stage director, teacher, writer, and producer of theatre and opera. Freeman directed Third Eye Productions include The Consul, The Medium, Sumeida’s Song, Dark Sisters, With Blood With Ink, Stitch, Stitch/Witness, and Beowulf. Additional operatic stage direction credits include the revival production of Jason and the Argonauts at Chicago Lyric Opera, Viardot’s Cendrillon with City Lyric Opera, Strauss’ Die Liebe Der Danae at Pittsburgh Festival Opera, Strauss’ die Fledermaus with Opera Mississippi, Stravinsky’s L’Historie Du Soldat, and Weber’s Der Freischütz. Zie has directed many plays, space generated theatrical events, burlesque events, nationally touring hiphop concerts, and workshops of new musicals and operas, including Jill Sobule and Krista Knight’s Crimson Lit. Zie once managed monster truck rallies and ran a sailboat company (not at the same time). Freeman wrote the musical, Chance the Snapper with Spicer Carr. Zie is a Founding Ensemble Member of Third Eye Theatre Ensemble, and Member Emeritus for the DirectorsLabChicago Steering Committee and NwAC. Freeman occasionally acts, including touring with Tetro di Viti. Freeman has spoken on the panels for National Opera Association, Chicago Theatre Symposium, and Opera America. Freeman is a recipient of the National Opera Association’s 2020 JoElyn Wakefield-Wright Stage Director Fellowship, Philadelphia’s 2022 Illuminate the Arts Grant, and served as a Directing Fellow for Wolf Trap Opera’s 2020, 2021, and 2022 season as well as a Lead Artist at Mercury Store. Freeman is represented by Marvel Arts Management.

Whitney George’s music traverses the affective terrain between tragedy and ecstasy, fragility and strength, bringing together romantically delicate intimacy and the spectacular darkness of the macabre. Haunted by ghosts and/of love, George’s operas, staged multimedia works, and chamber music coloristically explore the mysteries of irrationality, nightmare, and memory, sonically seeking lost objects and hidden subjects. Given George’s theatrical inclinations and preoccupation with the tragic, she has turned again and again to opera as both a composer and conductor.

Recently, George has been awarded a number of operatic commissions, premieres, and recognition: in 2017; the Elebash Award for her orchestration of Miriam Gideon’s opera Fortunato, which premiered under George’s baton in May 2019. In the same year; the commission of the two-act opera Princess Maleine by dell’Arte Opera and the video opera Julie by New Camerata Opera which was publicly released in 2020. During the 2023 season, Fresh Squeezed Opera commissions Fizz & Ginger, an immersive jazz experience, and the second operatic endeavor with libretitst Bea Goodwin. The duo is currently working on their third opera, No Man’s Land, set to premiere in Spring 2025.

George is the artistic director and conductor of The Curiosity Cabinet, a chamber orchestra formed in 2009. She holds an undergraduate degree from the California Institute of the Arts (2008), a master’s degree from Brooklyn College (2010), and DMA from the CUNY Graduate Center (2021). Librettist / Stage Director Bea Goodwin fashions feminist adaptations, ghost stories and historical fictions for a new era of opera. Her work has been hailed as “relentlessly clever” and “masterfully spellbinding,” with premieres in traditional theatrical spaces such as BAM, La Mama Experimental Theatre, National Sawdust, as well as site specific immersive experiences at the International Museum of Surgical Science, the Mark Hotel penthouse suite and the historic Montauk Club. Goodwin sits as Director of Development of The Curiosity Cabinet, an interdisciplinary ensemble from Brooklyn.

Goodwin has written seven operas and numerous art songs. Fizz & Ginger (composer Whitney George), a commission from Fresh Squeezed Opera, had its premier in the speakeasy cellar of the New York Comedy Club, the former site of the Palm Casino in the 1920s. Princess Maleine (composer Whitney George), a commission from dell’Arte Opera Ensemble had its premier at La MaMa’s Ellen Stewart Theatre in 2019. Tabula Rasa (composer Felix Jarrar), a commission from the Cantanti Project, premiered at The Blue Building in 2018. A Christmas Carol (composer Felix Jarrar), was commissioned by Gramercy Opera in 2017 and held at the historic Montauk Club, a building in Park Slope that was built during Dickens’ lifetime. Fairy Queen (collaboration with Maestro David Stech) was commissioned by Gramercy Opera, written for the gardens of the Mount Vernon museum in 2017. Goodwin’s first song cycle, Songs of the Soul Beams (composer Felix Jarrar), premiered at BAM Fisher in 2017 and then had a performance one year later at (le) Poisson Rouge.

She and composer Whitney George have written and produced three radio dramas, IN THE THROES OF DEATH which received the New Music USA Grant for future presentation. George created an ensemble of three masked players and one unmasked woodwind. These are available online on George’s Soundcloud.

Goodwin stages works from the canon as well. Her production of Salieri’s La Cifra with dell’Arte Opera Ensemble in 2018 was the North American premier of the work and has the lone recording in existence. Along with Director of Artistic Sign Language Alexandria Wailes, they created a translation of Britten’s Rape of Lucretia that was premiered with New Camerata Opera in 2019 starring Broadway’s beloved deaf actress Amelia Hensley.

Toni Machi (she/her) is over the moon with being a part of this production. Previously, she could be found as a burlesque performer in the New York nightlife, working with Opera Mississippi Opera, City Lyric Opera, Mercury Store, and Third Eye Theater Ensemble, working for reproductive justice, or teaching flying trapeze. Currently, she is finishing up her intimacy certification from IDC. Remember, better is better.

Delena is a costume and scenic designer currently based out of Chicago, IL. Recent credits include scenic design for Fefu and Her Friends and Yerma at the University of Illinois Chicago and Ouroboros at Links Hall, assistant scenic designer for Describe The Night at Steppenwolf Theatre (scenic designer-Collette Pollard), and associate scenic designer for Clyde’s at TheaterWorks Hartford (Connecticut, scenic designer-Collette Pollard), scenic/costume design for Beto, Beto El Abeto and costume design for Estado Vegetal at Zilker Botanical Garden (Austin, TX), costume design for Seedfolks at Metro Theatre Ensemble (St. Louis), Much Ado About Nothing at Asolo Repertory Theatre/FSU (Sarasota), and production/costume design for Addict Named Hal feature film by Lane Stanley (Austin, TX). Jo Chalhoub (They/Them) is a proud Lebanese-American, Queer, Milwaukee native that has lived and worked in the Chicago area since 2022. They hold a minor in Theatre Arts from UW-Milwaukee and have worked on- and off-stage on over 70 productions in Wisconsin and Chicago. Favorite stage management credits include Assassins (Four Seasons Theatre), Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson (Music Theatre of Madison), and serving as the stage manager for The Shedd Aquarium. Jo also has significant arts administration experience, serving as co-deputy of Forward Theater’s Advisory Company and as the former Company Manager of Steppenwolf. Jo has considerable experience in fight/intimacy direction as well and is grateful to join CFO for the first time!

George is the Producing Artistic Director of Chicago Fringe Opera, called “the city’s alt-opera company” by the Chicago Tribune. Recent directing credits for the company include LA JETEÉ and CORSAIR, as well as the company’s long-running hit show THE ROSINA PROJECT, a Hip-Hop adaptation of THE BARBER OF SEVILLE.
In addition, George has directed new productions and workshops of operas, musicals, and plays with Opera Festival of Chicago, Chicago Dramatists, the Chicago Sinfonietta, Pittsburgh Opera, the Bay View Music Festival and Chicago Folks Operetta.
An inspiring mentor, George is the Producing Artistic Director of Opera and Theatre at North Park University.

Now in its ninth season, George hosts OPERA BOX SCORE [America’s Talk Radio Show About Opera] on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and WNUR 89.3 FM Chicago.
