“Hindsight” is a co-production between Chicago Fringe Opera and /kor/ productions.
We recognize that Chicago Fringe Opera operates on Native land. The areas on which our rehearsals and performances take place are the traditional homelands of the people of the Council of Three Fires, including the Ojibwe, Potawatomi and Odawa. Although for over 200 years Native Nations have been forcibly removed from this territory, we acknowledge that the people of the Council of Three Fires, while facing on-going settler colonialism, continue to claim their place and act as stewards of their ancestral lands, which remain home to over 100,000 tribal members in the state of Illinois.
Our recognition is an expression of gratitude and appreciation and is intended to honor the indigenous people who have been living and working on this land from time immemorial.
The story of Leopold and Loeb serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of superiority complexes. Their belief that they were better than others led to tragic consequences, mirroring the divisive ideologies seen throughout history, from Nazi Germany to the racial tensions of the Chicago race riots.
It’s crucial to remember that no one is inherently better than anyone else. Each person contributes unique talents and perspectives that enrich our society. When we think of ourselves as superior, we risk closing ourselves off to new ideas and valuable feedback, stunting our growth.
This mindset fosters division and harmful attitudes like racism, nationalism, misogyny, and classism. Viewing ourselves as better makes it easier to dismiss those who are different, undermining the inclusive spirit of American culture.
Let’s uplift one another, embracing kindness and humility. Together, we can create an environment where everyone feels valued and inspired to contribute, unlocking the true magic of our shared humanity.
